Open-sourced 2026-07-15 under Apache 2.0 after a privacy backlash: the CLI had been uploading entire working directories (secrets included) to xAI Google Cloud buckets regardless of privacy settings. xAI disabled the upload path, deleted all retained data, turned retention off by default (from July 12), reset server-side usage limits, and published the full Rust codebase (~844,530 SLOC per Simon Willison) as a single bulk commit by grokkybara[bot]; external contributions are not accepted. x.ai properties now brand the company as SpaceXAI. Version 0.2.100 is from the July 13 changelog as reported in third-party review coverage; no versioned public release exists on the repo yet. Attribution research 2026-06-12 (unchanged by the open-sourcing): no bot identity, no PR template marker, and no default commit trailer. The strongest candidate, 'Co-Authored-By: Grok Build (xAI) <noreply@x.ai>', is 6 commits in a single repo; the wider 'Co-authored-by: Grok Build' family is ~176 commits all-time in inconsistent formats (a product default is byte-identical), and the bare 'Co-authored-by: Grok <noreply@x.ai>' trailer ran at tens per month before the May 2026 beta. All user-configured noise per the index noise rule, so Grok Build is not attributable; recheck if xAI ships default signing. The 'grok/' branch prefix shows tens of PRs per week and is unvalidated. Confirmed firsthand 2026-06-12: code committed and a PR opened through Grok Build carried the user's own identity with no trailer, marker, or bot involvement.
